Bridging The Virtual Gap With Location-Based Social Media Marketing

Social media users have gone mobile. Users want to stay connected while they're out and about in the physical world, and location-based social media allows them to do just that. These types of applications, such as Foursquare and Gowalla, are a type of social media game: users "check in" at various locations, and depending on the application, receive badges, pins, prizes and other incentives. For example, the SPCA in Victoria, BC participates in social media marketing Victoria by offering free pet food and insurance when Foursquare users check in during adoption. Users of Foursquare and Gowalla can also see who else is in the area, read real-time comments, recommend places to visit and physically meet up with each other.

For example, when was the last time you opened the phone book to retrieve information regarding a business, service or product? Probably a long time ago. Replacing this archaic form of marketing is social media marketing, the practice of marketing over social networking platforms.
